"A safe but sometimes chilly way of recalling the past is to force open a crammed drawer. If you are searching for anything in particular you don't find it, but something falls out at the back that is often more interesting."
Your 'Looking Back' DVD begins with an introductory meeting. We will discuss who's going to be involved and what aspects of their lives you wish to include.
Once the scope of the project has been agreed, we will build a timeline for the project which works for everyone involved. DVD interviews are usually shot in a familiar place where the interviewee will feel comfortable; we can work out the most suitable location.
Depending on the project, filming will comprise at least two interviews, each lasting a maximum of an hour. Interviews will be recorded during the day using available light.
Tessa Tylee will conduct the interview and record the DVD. She will draw on her experience as a documentary film maker to put people at ease and prompt them through a guided conversation.
This is your DVD. The number of sessions, what is covered and who is involved - is all up to you. However, we do suggest:
• The filming is done somewhere quiet where our interviewee will feel comfortable
• We invite someone who knows the person well to come along to the filming and suggest ideas or prompts
• Filming sessions should be no longer than 45 minutes
• Consider including still photographs which can be mixed with the interview footage.
Once the filming has been completed, the DVD will be edited to create a seamless story. For each hour filmed there is at least one hour post production work work to be done. Still images can be included at this stage.
Tessa Tylee has been producing and directing television for over 15 years. She helmed the first six series of popular TVNZ show ‘Mucking In’ (which won her a Qantas media award). Her documentary work includes profiles of New Zealand actor Kevin Smith and rally driver Possum Bourne.
Tessa has been a regular director and researcher on Maori Television’s ‘Kete Aronui’, which focuses on the life and work of Maori artists.
Tessa currently divides her time between her own production company ‘Alice In Television Ltd’ and ‘The Film Hawke’s Bay Trust’, a not-for-profit film office charged with bringing screen productions to the region.
She also teaches documentary filmmaking at the Eastern Institute of Technology in Hawke's Bay.
Transfer old VHS tapes to DVD or memory stick. We can remove any unwanted footage and combine footage from two or more VHS tapes.
Transfer still images from slide to DVD or memory stick.
Production can take from two weeks to a few months to complete, depending on the project. During this time, all material used to compile your family memoir will be stored securely in a safe.
Once the project is finished, Tessa will keep all material for a month before deleting the raw material. Unless you wish otherwise, we will keep the edited version in case you want to revisit the project in the future.
If you choose, you may allow us to use part or all of your video project for promotional purposes, and to show other families what to expect. However, unless we have your permission in writing, we will not show footage to any third party outside of the filming and editing process.
Once our invoice is paid, all recorded material (including unused footage) becomes your property.
